Many years back, the beloved Volkswagen Group 2.0 TDI underwent a major evolution when it moved from the EA188 / EA189 platform to the newer EA288 and EA288 Evo architectures.
That change brought improved efficiency, cleaner emissions, smoother operation, and in some applications, increased factory output. But it also brought something that mattered a lot to tuners: a new generation of engine control units.
The platform moved largely away from the older Bosch EDC17 ECUs and into the newer Bosch MD1 family.

For a while, AutoTuner engineers were able to give tuners access to the Bosch MD1CS004 ECU, including support for OBD flashing methods on some hardware 80 ECUs, commonly listed as HW: H80.
Then, as often happens with newer ECU platforms, factory updates from Bosch closed the door. Access became more limited, newer engines moved onto the MD1CS104 architecture, and tuning support for many of these cars dried up.
That has now changed.
To help protect the method and prevent the door from being quickly closed again, this solution is being offered through AutoTuner’s mail-in ECU unlock service. Once unlocked, tuners can use the AutoTuner Tool through bench mode to access the ECU and begin delivering tuning solutions.
This is especially exciting because the 2.0 TDI platform is extremely diverse. Factory output ranges from roughly 75 HP to 204 HP, with torque figures starting around 225 Nm and reaching as high as 450 Nm depending on the application.

These engines can be found across a wide range of vehicles in both transverse and longitudinal layouts, including models from Audi, Cupra, Ford, MAN, SEAT, Škoda, and Volkswagen.
That means this is not just one engine in one car. It is a broad platform found across many different vehicles, and AutoTuner is now giving tuners a path back into it.
Various tuners results are already showing strong gains, especially on factory-derated models.
Using the MK8 Volkswagen Golf platform as an example, typical tune-only results are approximately:
| Factory Output | Tuned Output |
|---|---|
| 115 HP / 300 Nm | 185 HP / 400 Nm |
| 150 HP / 360 Nm | 200 HP / 440 Nm |
| 200 HP / 400 Nm | 230 HP / 460 Nm |

For tuners, this opens the door to a large modern diesel platform that had become increasingly difficult to access.
For owners, it means more tuning options may soon become available from the shops and calibrators already working with AutoTuner.
And for anyone watching the broader tuning market, it is another example of AutoTuner continuing to unlock modern ECU platforms that many thought were off limits.
If you own one of these vehicles or tune them professionally, now is the time to start asking your tuner about AutoTuner support for Bosch MD1 2.0 TDI ECUs.
