Over the past several years, Mercedes-Benz has quietly created one of the most diverse turbocharged engine lineups in the automotive industry.

Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder can power an everyday luxury sedan, a compact AMG, a 400-plus-horsepower AMG 43 or a 671-horsepower AMG plug-in hybrid. Its 3.0-liter inline-six can be found in everything from an E-Class or GLE to the latest AMG 53 models. At the top of the range, Mercedes-AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 forms the heart of E PERFORMANCE hybrid systems producing more than 800 horsepower.

These engines should be some of the most exciting tuning platforms on the road.

There was just one major problem.

As Mercedes added 48-volt electrical systems, electric turbochargers, mild-hybrid assistance and plug-in-hybrid powertrains, it also introduced an increasingly complicated collection of locked Bosch engine controllers. Depending on the engine, model and year, tuners encountered MRG1, MRG1PI, MRG1V8, MRG2, MRG3 and MRG4 control systems.

Today, that barrier has been removed.

Three Displacements, an Entire Generation of Mercedes Vehicles

Mercedes did not simply replace one engine with another after 2020.

Instead, the company used three primary gasoline engine sizes as the foundation for dozens of conventional, performance, mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid powertrains:

The Mercedes 2.0T Became Much More Than an Entry-Level Engine

For many years, a Mercedes 2.0T was primarily associated with models such as the C 300, CLA 250 and GLC 300.

That changed dramatically during the current generation.

Mercedes expanded the 2.0T into several distinct engine families, each designed for a different vehicle architecture and performance level. The modern range includes the M260 and M264, the hand-built AMG M139, the electrified M254 and the longitudinal AMG M139l.

The M139l is one of Mercedes-AMG's most advanced engines, pairing an electrically assisted turbocharger with a high-output hybrid drivetrain to create exceptional power from a 2-liter engine.

Together, they power everything from an everyday compact crossover to an AMG producing more than 600 horsepower.

M260 and M264: The Foundation of the Early Modern 2.0T Range

At the beginning of the decade, the M260 and M264 represented much of Mercedes’ mainstream four-cylinder lineup.

The M260 was widely used in compact-platform vehicles, including versions of the A-Class, CLA, GLA and GLB. The related M264 served a variety of longitudinal applications. AMG-enhanced M260 variants also provided the foundation for the first generation of modern 35 AMG models.

Not every M260 or M264 uses the same controller. Earlier vehicles can use previous-generation Bosch systems. The AutoTuner unlock specifically targets supported Bosch MG1-equipped versions within the modern range.

These vehicles are particularly attractive to tuning shops because of their volume. A C 300, CLA 250 or GLC 300 may not attract the same attention as an AMG GT, but there are substantially more of them on the road.

M139: AMG Proves What a 2.0-Liter Engine Can Do

The M139 elevated the Mercedes four-cylinder from a mainstream luxury engine into a serious performance platform.

AMG developed the M139 as a hand-built engine for vehicles such as the A 45, CLA 45 and GLA 45. Factory output reached as high as 416 horsepower, making the M139 one of the highest-output series-production four-cylinder engines of its time.

The M139 was not simply an M260 with additional boost. It received major changes to its block, rotating assembly, cylinder head, cooling, fueling and turbocharging systems.

That factory engineering makes it an extremely interesting platform for additional calibration work. It begins with high specific output, strong airflow and hardware designed from the beginning for sustained AMG-level performance.

The hand-built AMG M139 transformed Mercedes’ 2.0-liter engine into a factory platform producing as much as 416 horsepower.

Supported M139 applications using the Bosch MG1CP002 can now be unlocked and accessed with the AutoTuner Tool. AutoTuner’s current coverage includes the 45 AMG and 45 AMG S branches of the engine family.

M254: The Mainstream 2.0T Enters the 48-Volt Era

The M254 represents the next major evolution of Mercedes’ longitudinal four-cylinder.

Rather than functioning as an isolated gasoline engine, the M254 was designed to operate with a 48-volt electrical system and integrated starter-generator. The electrical system can support functions such as engine starting, energy recuperation, coasting and brief torque assistance.

The M254 family now appears across a broad range of Mercedes vehicles, including supported versions of the:

  • C 300
  • CLE 300
  • E 350
  • GLC 300
  • GLC 350e
  • GLE 350
  • GLE 450e

The platform also demonstrates how complicated Mercedes naming has become. The same basic 2.0-liter combustion-engine architecture can be installed in a conventional mild hybrid or paired with a much larger plug-in-hybrid system.

From a tuner’s perspective, this creates two different opportunities.

First, these are high-volume vehicles with substantial demand for drivability, torque and performance calibrations. Second, many of the plug-in-hybrid versions combine a capable turbocharged engine with instant electric assistance, creating strong total-system performance before any calibration work begins.

The Bosch MG1CS046 and MG1CS100 ECUs used across this part of the range are now supported following the AutoTuner mail-in unlock.

M139l: From AMG 43 to AMG 63 S E PERFORMANCE

The M139l is arguably the most interesting four-cylinder engine Mercedes-AMG has produced.

The “l” version was developed for longitudinal installation and introduced an electric exhaust-gas turbocharger. A small electric motor is integrated into the turbocharger assembly to accelerate the compressor before exhaust flow alone would normally create full boost.

The longitudinal M139l uses an electrically assisted exhaust-gas turbocharger to build boost before exhaust flow alone would normally be sufficient.

In the AMG C 43, the hand-built M139l produces 402 horsepower and can receive a brief 13-horsepower contribution from the 48-volt starter-generator. The GLC 43 version produces 416 horsepower.

Mercedes-AMG then used the same basic engine family in an even more aggressive application.

In the C 63 S E PERFORMANCE and GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE, the combustion engine alone produces 469 horsepower. It is then combined with a rear-mounted electric motor and AMG performance battery to produce a 671-horsepower system in U.S.-market C 63 applications.

That means Mercedes now uses a 2.0-liter engine family in vehicles ranging from mainstream luxury cars to a plug-in-hybrid AMG with factory output that would have once required a heavily modified V8.

The Bosch MG1CP004 MRG1PI ECU controlling these engines is now covered by AutoTuner. Supported applications include:

  • Mercedes-AMG C 43
  • Mercedes-AMG GLC 43
  • Mercedes-AMG GT 43
  • Mercedes-AMG SL 43
  • Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE
  • Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE

After the mail-in unlock, the ECU can be accessed in Bench mode with the AutoTuner Tool without opening or physically modifying the ECU.

The Mercedes 3.0T Evolves From V6 to Electrified Inline-Six

At the beginning of the 2020s, some Mercedes models still used the outgoing M276 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6.

The M276 had already established a strong tuning reputation in vehicles such as earlier AMG 43 models. However, Mercedes’ new-generation 3.0T strategy moved away from the V6 layout and returned to an inline-six.

That distinction matters.

The modern M256 is a 3.0-liter inline-six, not a V6.

Mercedes returned to the classic inline-six architecture with the M256, combining the inherent balance and smoothness of a straight-six with turbocharging and a modern 48-volt electrical system.

M256: The Return of the Mercedes Inline-Six

Mercedes introduced the M256 with an integrated starter-generator and 48-volt electrical system. The architecture allowed the company to eliminate several conventional belt-driven accessories while adding electrical assistance, energy recovery and more advanced boost-management strategies.

By 2020, Mercedes was already using the M256 in 450-series vehicles such as the E 450. The engine subsequently spread across coupes, sedans, SUVs and the G-Class.

Supported modern applications include versions of the:

  • CLE 450
  • E 450
  • G 550
  • GLE 450
  • GLS 450
  • S 500

The M256 is one of the most promising all-around Mercedes tuning platforms. It combines the inherent smoothness of an inline-six with turbocharging, modern fuel control and electric torque assistance.

It also serves vehicles with very different personalities. The same engine family can be found in an executive sedan, a luxury coupe, a large family SUV or a G-Class.

M256M and AMG 53

AMG’s M256M versions increase the performance potential of the inline-six platform.

The AMG CLE 53 combines the M256M 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt electrical assistance and AMG-specific calibration.

The modern AMG 53 family includes vehicles such as the CLE 53, E 53 and GLE 53. Depending on the model and generation, these engines are paired with mild-hybrid or plug-in-hybrid systems.

The CLE 53 uses an AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline-six producing 443 horsepower, while newer E 53 and GLE 53 Hybrid models combine the combustion engine with a more substantial electric drive system. Mercedes has continued developing the engine into newer M256M EVO versions as the 53 range becomes more heavily electrified.

For tuners, the important point is that the gasoline engine remains a major contributor to the vehicle’s performance.

The hybrid system can fill torque during low-speed operation and gear changes, but the turbocharged inline-six still controls a significant part of the power curve, throttle response and sustained acceleration.

Supported M256 and M256M applications are covered through the Bosch MG1CP002, MG1CS046 and MG1CS100 branches of the AutoTuner unlock. Current coverage includes 450, 500, 53 AMG mild-hybrid and 53 AMG plug-in-hybrid configurations.

The Mercedes-AMG 4.0T V8 Enters the E PERFORMANCE Era

The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 remains the emotional center of the modern Mercedes-AMG lineup.

The engine family includes the Mercedes-oriented M176, the widely used AMG M177, the M177 E PERFORMANCE and the sports-car-focused M178. AutoTuner’s supported engine list covers all four branches within the applicable Bosch MDG1 generation.

These engines use a hot-V arrangement, placing the turbochargers inside the V of the engine. This shortens the path between the exhaust ports and turbochargers, helping improve response while creating a compact overall package.

The AMG 4.0-liter V8 places its twin turbochargers inside the cylinder banks, shortening the exhaust path and creating a compact hot-V layout.

M176: Luxury-Car V8 Performance

The M176 serves the luxury side of the modern 4.0T family.

Applications such as the Mercedes-Benz S 580 use the engine to deliver smooth, effortless torque rather than the most aggressive AMG calibration. The same general engine family also appears in ultra-luxury Mercedes-Maybach applications.

These vehicles may not be traditional tuner cars, but they represent an underserved high-value market. Owners of an S-Class or Maybach are often looking for more performance without sacrificing refinement or factory-like drivability.

M177: The Modern AMG Workhorse

The M177 powers a wide variety of AMG vehicles.

Depending on the model and output level, it can be found in:

  • AMG GT 55
  • AMG GT 63
  • AMG GT 63 Pro
  • AMG SL 55
  • AMG SL 63
  • AMG G 63
  • Other AMG 63 applications

Mercedes uses the engine across luxury sedans, roadsters, sports cars and SUVs. Factory calibrations vary significantly between applications, which illustrates how much of the vehicle’s character is created through boost control, torque targeting, throttle management, ignition, fueling and thermal strategies.

The engine also benefits from an enormous existing performance ecosystem. Turbocharger upgrades, cooling systems, exhaust systems, fueling components and strengthened driveline parts are already being developed for multiple M177 applications.

M177 E PERFORMANCE: An 800-Plus-Horsepower Hybrid V8

Rather than replacing the V8, Mercedes-AMG integrated it into a new performance-hybrid architecture.

The M177 E PERFORMANCE combines the 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine at the front of the vehicle with an electric motor mounted at the rear axle. The rear electric drive can provide immediate torque while the combustion engine continues delivering high sustained power.

AMG’s E PERFORMANCE architecture combines the front-mounted M177 V8 with an electric drive unit at the rear axle.

The AMG S 63 E PERFORMANCE produces a combined 791 horsepower and 1,055 lb-ft of system torque. The AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE 4-Door Coupe increases combined system output to 831 horsepower.

These vehicles demonstrate why electrification does not mean the end of engine tuning.

Instead, it changes the environment in which the engine operates. The combustion engine must work with the electric motor, battery, transmission, all-wheel-drive system and several torque-management controllers.

On plug-in-hybrid vehicles, the AutoTuner ECU unlock provides access to the combustion-engine calibration. Final combined output can still be influenced by torque requests, protection strategies and limits contained in the other hybrid and drivetrain controllers.

Even with that qualification, supporting the engine ECU is a critical first step. Without access to it, tuners cannot properly calibrate the turbocharged V8 that remains at the center of the system.

The Bosch MG1CP003 MRG1V8 ECU used in the latest supported V8 applications is now unlockable. Coverage includes the Mercedes S 580, Maybach SL 680, AMG 55, AMG 63, AMG 63 Pro and AMG 63 S E PERFORMANCE ranges.

Why These Engines Are Such Strong Tuning Platforms

The modern Mercedes lineup is complex, but the underlying ingredients are extremely attractive for tuning.

Every Major Engine Is Turbocharged

Boost pressure, airflow, ignition, fueling, throttle control and torque management are all calibration-dependent. The ECU has a direct role in determining how the engine delivers power throughout the operating range.

Mercedes Uses Wide Factory Output Spreads

Closely related engines appear at several factory power levels.

That does not mean every lower-output model has identical hardware to the highest-output version. Turbochargers, cooling, fuel systems, exhaust components and internal parts can differ.

It does show, however, how much performance and vehicle character Mercedes creates through the combination of hardware and calibration.

The Platforms Cover a Huge Number of Vehicles

This is not an unlock limited to one rare supercar.

The supported range stretches from high-volume vehicles such as the C 300, CLA 250 and GLC 300 to the AMG C 63, G 63, S 63 and GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE.

A Mercedes specialist can now serve customers across nearly every part of the modern gasoline lineup.

Electrification Can Complement the Tuned Engine

A 48-volt starter-generator, electric exhaust-gas turbocharger or rear-mounted hybrid motor can improve response and provide torque while the turbocharged combustion engine builds airflow.

The electric system does not eliminate the importance of the engine calibration. In many cases, it makes accurate torque modeling and communication between controllers even more important.

The ECU Was the Missing Piece

The engines, vehicles and performance parts already existed.

Coverage Beyond the 2.0T, 3.0T and 4.0T Gasoline Platforms

The ECU does not need to be opened, and once it is returned, the tuner can access the calibration directly with the AutoTuner Tool. The earlier MRD1 platform supports both Bench and OBD programming. The Continental EMS71 supports OBD.
